In 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic threatened the world population which was at about 1.8 billion people. 500 million people (about 1/3 of the population at the time) were infected. 

Mass graves had to be dug around the world as a result. Since then it seems we have been living in a state of fear and on high alert, for not IF but WHEN the next deadly mutated virus will hit again. 

The fear is even propagated and heightened because of our fixation; as evidenced in all the TV shows and movies about pandemics and zombie holocausts, like Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, Contagion, and AMC’s The Walking Dead.  

Recent History

There have always been accounts of flu outbreaks. Remember SARS, the plagues of leprosy that stained faces, and those vanishing populations like the legendary Spanish flu of 1918?

The Spanish flu was the perfect example of what happens when a mutated virus meets malnourished, stressed, injured and inflamed soldiers, who jumped on boats at the end of the war to get home, and brought with them more than big hugs for their family – they brought the virus back to their homeland. 

These soldiers lived in less than sanitary conditions. Food options were limited to those that lined an aluminum can or those that were dried, requiring the simple addition of water (if you could find water, that is).

With limited hydration and good quality food the body suffers, plus add insult to injury of the severe mental stress that accompanies war-torn locations and PTSD, that many soldiers suffer from. I’m sure that not much can compare to living through that. Their physical bodies were wounded, inflamed and tossing and turning in their sleep. 

In essence, they were the perfect debilitate jalopy, the very best vehicle to propagate this deadly virus around the world. 

At home, many countries were ravaged by war, and once again, we see malnourished mothers and children who were stressed out and overworked. Trying to make ends meet and manage a household; the perfect receptacle to welcome the gift from their loved ones returning from war.

Likely to Get Sick | Conducive Conditions for Disease 

What conditions are ideal for diseases like influenza to flourish in? Think of it this way; our body is no different than a garden, or an ecosystem.

This is contrary to popular belief where many define the body as a machine. A machine can get pieces taken out of it. An ecosystem cannot; when one aspect is ripped out, it can be devastating to the entire system. 

There is one thing that is notorious for throwing off the beautiful balance in the ecosystem of our body. This one thing is STRESS, and in our bodies, this causes the “dis” in dis-ease. 

Here are a few of the many possible types of stress:

  • Digestive stress
  • Nutrient deficiency stress
  • Inflammatory and immune stress 
  • Mental and emotional stress 
  • Microbial stress

The list goes on and on…

We know that when we are weak and devitalized from repetitive, non-ceasing stress we are more prone to sickness. This is why influenza typically affects elderly populations, children and those with “dis-ease” or immune-compromised conditions more often. 

Notice the spelling of “dis-ease”.

The meaning of the prefix ‘dis’ is a body or system that is not in balance.

This is the same as a garden. One that lacks proper nutrients in the soil, adequate sunlight, water, or love messages won’t grow and is likely to develop infestations and disease. 

It only makes sense that the Spanish flu reached such staggering proportions and infected 1/3 of the world’s population at the time.

The true epidemic, in my opinion, may not have been one of the virus, but rather the overall state of health of the population of the world at the time. 

How about them apples? They should have been eating more!…

It was World War I, after all. Living in that time would mean constantly feeling an inner sensation of imbalance, that the ‘dis’ could come upon us at any time, and stress became programmed into the makeup of our bodies. Stress was the norm, not the exception as it should be.

Why We Focus On The Bug 

You may be familiar with Louis Pasteur, who in the 1800s popularized the idea of The Germ Theory and made it mainstream. The bug (virus, bacteria, yeast, parasite, etc), became the enemy to attack. Kill it and life is good. It was widely accepted as the main tenet that permeates medicine to this day; including in cancer treatments with the bug being our own tissues.

But what most aren’t privy to, is that at the same time, Claude Bernard was promoting and proving the terrain theory, or physical vitalism. He postulated that the body is an ecosystem and that an ecosystem in health, has a vital force and can beat all disease1.

These have served us well, as we have learned an incredible amount about the bug and how it affects an unhealthy body. On the other hand, vitalism went backstage once Bernard was out of the picture. 

However, there is hearsay that Pasteur, on his deathbed, recanted his theory and said: “Bernard was right, it’s not about the bug, it’s the terrain”.

Why We Should Focus on Terrain, Vital Force, and Physical Vitalism of The Body

The ancient doctors of the past, Hippocrates, Galen, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors always searched for ways to support the system as a whole. They focused on the foundation, the pillars that would create health. 

This is the mechanism of wellbeing, of positioning for success in spite of what is going on around you.

You really can’t control what is happening around you but one thing is for sure, you can control what you do. 

A healthy, well-balanced body with a solid foundation is in the right position to overcome anything that may come its way. This was the work that Bernard was so passionate about.

Inflammation must be reduced in the body to make space for healing. Stress is another key factor that must be reduced in order for healing to take place. How to Be More Mindful | Body-Connection Movement

Consciousness is the greatest gift that we have ever been given. You may not even realize it, but it’s probably the most important thing that we have; our most valued possession that separates us from other mammals – blue blooded reptiles, birds, plants and all other beautiful living things created by the source of life. 

Consciousness is like having the great big white light flow through our bodies. It is a gift from the divine, the ability to utilize our senses to look, feel, smell, taste, hear, intuit, and turn all of those exquisite, brilliant sensations into ideas that then create reality. 

Consciousness is about thinking about the possibility of what can be. As Stephen Covey states in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

“Everything is created twice, first in your mind and again in reality.”

That is the power of consciousness and awareness. 

Dr. Marisol ND., Queen of the Thrones® teaching about consciousness Without conscious thought, we would still be living in the Savannah hiding out in caves without all of the incredible modern advances that we have now. So please, don’t spoil or waste this gift that we have all inherited. 

Instead, I want to encourage you. If you have been feeling disconnected, alone, isolated, or unsure of what your body is doing – like it’s working against you and not for your greater good – I want you to lean into this and take the lessons from it so you can become the best that you can be. All it takes is time and practice. 

Practice what? You may be asking.

Mindfulness Practice: Body-Connectedness

Thoughts become your reality (whether you’re thinking good things or bad). So when we want a positive reality, we need to think about these positive thoughts more often. We want to train our mind to observe what our body is telling us, and then have our mind think of what we want more often. 

This is how we can become conscious and connected to our body. This is the reason why the very first thing I teach people in my clinical practice is: “What does your poo say about you?”. It’s because this serves as the first and easiest step to developing your body-consciousness. Not in an obsessive or unhealthy way either, but in a way that allows and observes… plus, pooping is something that you (hopefully) do everyday.

What is Body-Connectedness? 

It is the ability to be aware of what is going on inside our bodies. 

You wouldn’t believe how many people are so disconnected. I was, and sometimes I still am. You have been, and sometimes you still are. How do I know this? Because I am not only an examiner of popular culture, but I am also a naturopathic doctor; I have an intimate connection with the inner workings and understanding of my patients and this is where I see a major gap. 

Especially when they first come in to see me. 

It’s a constant job. Directing our thoughts into our awareness, and frankly, many of us are not highly skilled or trained. Quite the opposite actually… We are highly distracted and disconnected. 

Being disconnected goes something like this:

  • You block the gut feelings that you get
  • You avoid feeling what is happening in your body, mind and soul by distracting yourself with habits and addictions (such as drugs, booze, food, sex, and anything else you can think of – disrupting your ability to have awareness and create new habits2)

Having body-connectedness bring us back to our beginning. Our root and our core feelings are an understanding of what the signs and symptoms our bodies are telling us. 

Because as Oprah’s favorite author, Maya Angelou, says:

“When you know better, do better.”

Many of us are walking around not knowing.  It’s time to get in the know of your body. It is your one and only temple gifted to you along with your consciousness. 

Let’s find out what the messages are that we receive from the body… the signs and symptoms.

What is a Symptom 

From a medical perspective, I see patients and ask them how they are feeling.  When they recount what is going on, they are telling me about their symptoms. 

Symptoms are like storytelling about your daily life experience and how you are feeling in your body. These symptoms are super valuable, and it’s important to become aware, conscious, and connected to what is occurring in your body. 

Examples of symptoms include:

  • Exhaustion
  • Brain fog
  • Sadness
  • Difficulties pooping
  • Cravings
  • Itching
  • Sleep issues
  • B*tchiness

The list goes on! These are all expressions of what is going on within the body.

What is a Sign

Signs are not so much our experience but rather what you or someone else can objectively see. 

Examples of signs include:

  • Acne
  • Itchy and inflamed skin
  • Bloated belly
  • Loose stools
  • Trembling or shaking

My job on this earth is to help you have body-connectedness and to put it in socially relatable words. As Ace of Base said, “I saw the sign” and you should also be seeing your signs daily.

It means let’s take the first step in the “I love me” department and learn what your body is trying to tell you. Let’s learn how to connect to it and become conscious of the cries for help and the love letters it sends us.

When I first heard about cleansing I was under the impression that it was just a fad.  A trend that would soon disappear.  Something that Gwyneth Paltrow or the latest Hollywood starlet was promoting.  When I began my journey and dove deep into the science and learning of what natural medicine truly is, I fell in love with the ways that natural-focused care givers activate the healing powers of the body, known as the “vis” in naturopathic medicine.  I soon realized that cleansing and detoxification practices are not a new-age Hollywood hippie thing.  In fact, their roots date back to before biblical times.  Basically to the beginning of the conscious human!

To begin, I think it is really important to understand and define the terminology.  I am often confused, as I know you are too, by the manner in which people use the terms cleansing and detoxification.  Are they interchangeable?  Do they mean the same thing?  Which one should I be doing?  Let’s start by clarifying these Uber important terms and then delving into the 5 most important keys to re-engaging these vital life-promoting, disease-destroying functions of our glorious bodies.  Then I’ll share my most important tool that I use in my clinical practice to jumpstart these functions in our bodies.

Cleansing is the ability for our bodies to eliminate waste created in our systems by the foods we eat, our natural metabolic processes and what we accumulate just by living on planet earth. 

Cleansing Pathways of the Body

Our most important cleansing pathways include:

  1. Stools – Your poo is the primary vehicle for the elimination of leftovers/roughage from your food.  The majority of stools consists of bacteria, as well as fat soluble substances such as cholesterol, toxins of all types including heavy metals like mercury and lead, and excess hormones like estrogen.
  2. Urine – A primary vehicle that eliminates what the stools cannot, often excesses of heavy metals and other substances such as uric acid. 
  3. Sweat –  A secondary elimination pathway.  This pathway should be encouraged if stools and urine are functioning optimally.  People will often note worsening body odour if they are having problems with constipation.  This is because the genius of our bodies will always search for a way to get the things out that are no good for us. 
  4. Breath – Breath is well known for the elimination of carbon dioxide.
  5. Periods – For women, our periods are a vehicle for elimination of toxicity.  It is researched that women in menopause, after loosing their periods, are more toxic and will experience hot flashes as an adaptation to continue elimination, since they are so toxic.

Detoxification Sites of the Body 

Detoxification on the other hand, is the metabolic transformation of a substance, usually from one thing into another.  It occurs mainly in the following places in the body: 

  1. Liver – Phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification help to package and transform substances that are not easy to eliminate via the cleansing pathways. 
  2. Kidneys – Part of phase 3 of detoxification, where further filtration occurs.
  3. Mucous Membranes – Part of phase 3 of detoxification, this is most predominate in the gut. Phase 3 is the final stage of detoxification before cleansing.
  4. Various cells in the body – All aid in the detoxification process. 

Both cleansing and detoxification are deeply connected.  They are both extremely inhibited by 5 occurrences that can happen in our bodies. 

What are the Causes of my body Reduced Ability to Cleanse and Detoxify?

1. Stress

This is the #1 problem for the body, and unfortunately, because we live in today’s industrialization era we are bombarded.  The body doesn’t differentiate stressors as chemical, emotional or physical.  It puts all stress into the same mixing pot.  So you could be having an altercation with your mother-in-law, be exposed to high levels of pollutants, or injure your leg.  All of these instances would cause stress and significantly inhibit your ability to transform (detox) and eliminate (cleanse). 

Stress is now being touted as the #1 cause of disease in the modern world.  Something very interesting to note for women with hormonal problems, specifically those with estrogen dominance; is that with increasing stress, our adrenals produce increased cortisol.  Increased cortisol depletes your progesterone levels, which can leave you with a relative progesterone deficiency.  This can severely aggravate estrogen dominance related issues such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

2. Inflammation

Has also been pointed out as a villain, A.K.A. the ‘silent killer’ in modern medicine and it’s no surprise.  When we have high inflammation we also experience elevated levels of acidity in our bodies.  Ironically, inflammation is a purposeful mechanism that helps us heal. 

Hippocrates stated, “Give me the power to create inflammation and I will heal every disease.”  However, too much of a good thing can damage us.  Inflammation is purposefully destructive, to actually help rebuild our tissues.  But when the fire of inflammation gets out of control because there is too much junk to burn, that’s when we start having problems.  The body often responds with trying to control the fire by adding water. 

The result is we get bloated, we may also experience weight gain, often in the central core of our bodies.  For others this may translate to excessive aches and pains in the joints.  And for others, mood can be greatly affected because the inflammation impacts their neurological system.  It all depends on your unique biology and weak areas.

3. Lack of Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect our cells against damage from toxic substances, and they help to clear them out of the body.  Glutathione is known as the master detoxification agent.  We are constantly exposed to thousands of toxins – in the food we eat, the air we breathe, the products we put onto our bodies.  Glutathione helps to move most (if not all) of these harmful substances OUT.

4. Inability to Eliminate

When you can’t eliminate properly, recirculation of toxins happens.  Constipation is a huge issue in our society.  We should be going each and every day, the length of our elbow to our wrist bone.  If we aren’t eliminating this much, our stools are sitting in the body holding waste materials that are reabsorbed and a source of repollution to our system.

How To Improve Cleansing and Detox – Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs are used by many of my patients.  Why?  Because the 4 problems listed above – stress, inflammation, lack of antioxidants and problems with elimination – are underlying issues in so conditions.  If you have a hormonal, immune or nervous system problem, it is possible that these issues exist somewhere in your body, dependant on your individual physiology and your weak zones.

2. Reduce Inflammation

When we are inflamed, our bodies are acidic.  The enzymes in our bodies, which are the keys to the lock that turn on metabolism, don’t function properly in an acidic environment.  They require an alkaline environment.  Castor oil has been demonstrated to be an effective anti-inflammatory, reducing water retention and swelling as much as capsaicin6, but without the rubefacient effect. 

Castor oil is almost identical in chemical structure to the body’s natural anti-inflammatory prostaglandin Ep3.  Coincidence?  Unlikely.  Like I mentioned earlier, inflammation is like fire, and what does a firefighter do to put out a fire?  They put water on it.  Central abdominal bloating and weight gain are often caused because our body sends water to the site of inflammation to ‘put out the fire’.

3. Improve Glutathione Status 

Glutathione is the master detoxification agent of the body.  Unfortunately, it is quickly depleted and its depletion is in part the cause of many chronic diseases including autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.  Glutathione is difficult to replete because there are not many food sources.  One source is whey protein, but I do not typically recommend it because it’s dairy. Rooibos tea is another source, which I recommend adding to your tea cabinet.  Glutathione can be supplemented via IV, and NAC and magnesium supplementation can help (although the effectiveness is debatable).  Bottom line is it is not easy to get.
