2 Holiday Health Hacks to Digest Better, Bloat Less, & Stress Less This Holiday Season

Ohh, the holidays. This year is going to look a lot different than it ever has before. I find myself reminiscing on past holidays. Honestly, for me, the holiday season used to be like one of those Instagram vs. Reality moments…

I’d expect Thanksgiving to be relaxing: I’d think of a perfectly juicy seasoned turkey with tangy cranberry sauce. Granny’s legendary stuffing. Of course, a variety of scrumptious pies… I’d imagine myself effortlessly prepping for the big day – like that scene in Snow White where she dances around her kitchen with the help of all the cute forest animals.

But in reality, I’d become a bucket of stress. Running from here to there, like a turkey with its head off, simply trying to get the Thanksgiving turkey on the table! And that delicious, mouth watering dinner I dreamed of… It would taste amazing going down, but 20 minutes later it had me bloating out like I was 6 months pregnant… Only to end up passing out on Granny’s couch in a food-coma… And having toilet troubles for the next week…

Does this sound familiar?

Squash Holiday Stress

The holiday season can be stressful. It’s usually a busy time filled with lots of events, decorating, cooking, cleaning, shopping… the list goes on. This year will be different, and it will be stressful for different reasons.

For those of us with digestive issues, this stress, mixed in with potentially eating foods that we aren’t used to, can lead to uncomfortable bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Feeling crappy only leads to more stress, further aggravating these symptoms. It’s a vicious cycle.

As a naturopathic doctor who has struggled with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for the greater part of my life, I’ve learned how to breeze through the holidays, stress-free, with only the occasional flare-up if I overindulge.

Here I’m going to divulge two simple, fool-proof holiday health hacks I’ve cultivated to support the body through the Thanksgiving season.

Holiday Health Hack #1: The Castor Oil Pack

Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Packs for liver detox and improve digestion
The Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack™ Compress

For me, and all of my patients, Castor Oil Packs are non-negotiable. In fact, a daily castor oil pack practice is the very first thing that I get all of my patients to do. Why?

First and foremost, Castor Oil Packs help to keep our stress response balanced. The soft compression of the organic pack against the skin helps to move our body from the stressed-out state into the relaxed state1. It also promotes hormones that make us feel good, like oxytocin2 (A.K.A. the love hormone) and dopamine3.

They help regulate bowel movements by improving smooth muscle tone of the digestive tract4, and they’ve been shown to alleviate constipation just as well as laxatives – but without negative side effects5

Castor Oil Packs help you beat the bloat when worn over the liver/tummy, by reducing inflammation6 in your core. They also improve the balance of the bugs in your gut (A.K.A. your microbiome) by breaking down biofilm7 8 9, leading to better absorption of nutrients and less gas!

Plus they help us detox by providing antioxidants like nitric oxide10, glutathione11, vitamin E and omegas12. Castor oil packs are especially helpful to wear overnight if you have a few alcoholic drinks… hasta la vista hangover!

In a nutshell, castor oil packs support the foundations of our health and healing – helping us poop better, sleep better, digest better, cleanse better, bloat less and stress less. This why they’re my #1 Holiday Health Hack.

The Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack™ Bundle

The Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack™ takes less than 2 minutes to prepare and ties onto your body, so you can wear it while you do all of your holiday prep work – cooking, cleaning, facetiming your family, you name it. Even better, you can wear it to bed and let it work it’s magic while you dream. My patients say it helps them sleep like a baby!

Do your castor oil pack every day for at least 1 hour to get the most benefit. As with anything, consistency is key!

Holiday Health Hack #2: Avoid Your Food Sensitivities

Food, food – glorious, delectable, irresistible food! A focal point of the holiday season and something that we all look forward to. But if you have digestive issues, it can often be a source of anxiety.

I remember thinking to myself before holiday dinners, “Will there be food options that don’t upset my tummy?”, “Will there be a bathroom close by if I have an emergency?”, “Is this dress too tight for my inevitable post-dinner food baby?”

Queen of the Thrones Food Empowerment Kit to overcome food sensitivities
Food sensitivities can increase during holidays

How do you know if you have food sensitivities? Well, it’s simple… Each of us has unique sensitivities to certain foods, sometimes even healthy ones! (For me it was broccoli, kale, almonds, and rice!) Reactions to eating a food sensitivity can be difficult to pin down, because they can take up to 72 hours to manifest and symptoms can appear anywhere in the body.

Foggy brain, weight gain, fatigue, the confusion of “is this really caused by my thyroid?”. The shame of feeling like you always need to cover up because of your skin irritations. The pressure on your chest & sleepless nights; your mind rapidly flipping between “Am I feeling this way because of something I ate or do I have an undiagnosed disease!?”

All of these symptoms can easily be triggered by food sensitivities. But where do we draw the line between symptoms of disease & symptoms of food sensitivities? Right here! If you don’t know what your personal food sensitivities are, you can use the 5 natural at-home techniques for revealing your food sensitivities that I share in the Queen of the Thrones® Food Empowerment Kit.

The best thing to do is avoid your food sensitivities. When I attend holiday dinners I always make sure to bring some holiday dishes of my own that are free from my food sensitivities, that way I know I’ll have some healthy choices that don’t upset my tummy.

To be proactive, don’t forget to wear your Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack™ daily. With regular use, castor oil packs help your body to become more resilient – so if you do eat something that doesn’t agree with you – they will help you bounce back better and more quickly! In acute situations of indigestion and bloating, they feel like a great big hug for your belly and immediately help you to relax.

This year, we won’t have the luxury of large holiday gatherings with friends and family. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do something special!! Find out what your food sensitivities are (learn how with the Food Empowerment Kit) then throw on your castor oil pack and whip up some delicious holiday dishes.

Don’t Forget The Love!

Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Packs a health alternative for the family
Enjoy your holiday season with your family and good health

These Holiday Health Hacks will help you waltz through the holidays with less stress. And always remember, at the heart of the holiday season is love. It is a time to gather together with the people we care about (whether it be physically or virtually), creating meaningful memories and showing our gratitude toward one another.

Try to infuse love into everything you do this holiday season, it’s the best gift you can give to yourself and those around you! Happy, Healthy Thanksgiving!

Can Healthy Food Be Bad For You?

Heal your Food Sensitivities with the Food Empowerement Kit

Is it possible that the foods you’re eating everyday are the biggest source of poison you’re putting into your body? Perhaps you already have a gut feeling that this rings true to you.

Maybe you’ve already tested for food sensitivities, but your results said you were sensitive to absolutely everything. This left you with nothing to eat! Or perhaps you were on the other end of the scale. You’re sensitive to nothing but still unsure of what to eat because of the symptoms you’re experiencing.

What if the superfoods that you think you should be eating (because they are considered ‘super’), aren’t actually super for YOU?

What are the Cost Common Food Sensitivity Symptoms

When it comes to figuring out what foods are right for you, it’s imperative to identify them. You’ll finally break free from the suffering you’re dealing with (not just in your gut, but all over your system).

Symptoms & suffering correlated to food sensitivities can include:

  • Unpleasant periods accompanied by PMS and cramps
  • Mood swings that change without rhyme or reason
  • Depression, anxiety and panic attacks where it feels as if the world is ending
  • Extreme, debilitating fatigue where you can’t get out of bed
  • IBS, constipation, loose stools, uncomfortable bloating
  • Weight gain, thyroid problems, hormonal issues and menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats
  • Trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, insomnia
  • Joint aches and pain

And so much more… the list goes on and on and on.

If you’re struggling with any of these problems, I invite you to explore this powerful food sensitivities healing tool to improve your gut health.

Food Sensitivities – A Root Cause of Disease

From the perspective of natural holistic health, food sensitivities are often seen as the root cause of physical conditions and many mental and emotional conditions. Why?

  • Since food is something that we ingest everyday, it has the potential to be the biggest toxic substance that we consume (on purpose) causing us harm. After all, “One man’s meat is another man’s poison.” -Lucretius
  • Undetected food sensitivities are a source of inflammation and stress on the body; the two MAIN causes of disease. So it’s not food sensitivities that cause disease. Rather, the stress and inflammation produced by food sensitivities that cause further issues.
  • We can create our own sensitivities by eating certain foods during TRAUMATIC experiences in our lives. The trauma doesn’t need to be one of dramatic proportions, it just needs to be traumatic to you. The body can’t digest properly when it’s stressed. So if you’re eating a lot of a certain food during a traumatic time in your life, it sits in the digestive tract longer, which increases the sensitization capacity of the food, rendering it more immunogenic and/or allergenic1.
  • We are disconnected. For many, it is due to our past traumas that have severed our body’s ability to properly feel from the waist down. The physical and spiritual elements of our bodies don’t talk anymore. So we eat food that is supposed to nourish us, but we can’t feel whether it is good or bad because of this disconnect. This may be why people with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) often also suffer from psychiatric disease2 3.
  • Many of us have been on rounds of antibiotics or prescription medications that destroy the healthy balance of gut flora (A.K.A. our gut microbiome)4 5. This can lead to conditions like leaky gut or small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), increasing the likelihood of food sensitivities.

Superfood Diets

Most of us find ourselves sitting on what I like to call Pain Island. Here we feel unwell, confused, & are simply going through the motions. I was there for the greater part of my life.

I had odd symptoms; like a constant itchiness under my skin, especially over my belly button and abdomen area. I was bloating so bad after eating that I seriously looked pregnant. My periods were so out of whack that in my late 20s I was experiencing symptoms of menopause, like hot flashes and night sweats. On top of it all I was so chronically fatigued it became next to impossible for me to even get out of bed.

I went to multiple practitioners to find out what was wrong. Many of them instructed me to remove the most common allergens from my diet like dairy and wheat (A.K.A. gluten), and put me on a “superfood diet”. I was so thankful because I thought it was finally going to be the solution that would stop my suffering.

Queen of The Thrones Castor Oil helps you heal Food Sensitivities.

So there I was, consuming broccoli, almonds & kale — all of the “good stuff” — for months, yet I was still feeling horribly off and wrong.

The practitioners would tell me,

“Don’t worry, keep going, it’s just a normal healing crisis.”

It was a crisis alright! I didn’t feel like I was healing and I was getting all the more desperate. After going to 5 different practitioners, I got fed up and finally took matters into my own hands. I went back to school to become a naturopathic doctor & find MY answers.

I’m grateful for these hardships now. It was through my pain and confusion that I found my passion and became a naturopathic doctor.

Healthy Food can be a Food Sensitivity

Eventually I discovered my unique food sensitivities, and guess what they were? Broccoli, almonds & kale. The main foods in my ‘superfood diet’ were at the root of my ongoing health issues.

Healthy Food can be a Food Sensitivity

The Journey to Healing

Through my personal experience, education & clinical practice with thousands of patients, I’ve come to understand there are 3 steps in the journey to healing:

  1. Reduce the two main causative factors of disease: stress and inflammation.
  2. Reconnect the physical and the spiritual.
  3. Test for sensitivities using multiple techniques, more than simply blood tests (the validity of laboratory IgG tests is debated in the medical community6 7).

These three steps will lead you through the journey that takes us from Pain Island, across ‘Know Thyself’ waters all the way to Pleasure Island, where we feel healthy, empowered, free from food sensitivities & ready to live out our purpose. It took me a long time to get to Pleasure Island… But it was well worth it! Plus, thousands of my patients who have done the same feel this way too.

Food Empowerment Kit takes you from Pain Island to Pleasure Island

I want to give you the map and show you the shortcuts to get to Pleasure Island quickly. I want you to know what I wish I would have known all those years ago — how to test, what to do, and all of the ins and outs of navigating your personal world of food sensitivities.

The Food Empowerment Kit is the map that will help you to navigate from Pain Island where you’re feeling totally unwell in your body & simply going through to motions, to Pleasure Island, where you feel empowered, healthy & ready to live out your purpose & passion.

Castor Oil Packs, Influenza (Flu), & Your Immune System

Dr. Marisol Teijeiro ND, Queen of the Thrones®

In 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic threatened the world population which was at about 1.8 billion people. 500 million people (about 1/3 of the population at the time) were infected.

Mass graves had to be dug around the world as a result. Since then it seems we have been living in a state of fear and on high alert, for not IF but WHEN the next deadly mutated virus will hit again.

The fear is even propagated and heightened because of our fixation; as evidenced in all the TV shows and movies about pandemics and zombie holocausts, like Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, Contagion, and AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Recent History

There have always been accounts of flu outbreaks. Remember SARS, the plagues of leprosy that stained faces, and those vanishing populations like the legendary Spanish flu of 1918?

The Spanish flu was the perfect example of what happens when a mutated virus meets malnourished, stressed, injured and inflamed soldiers, who jumped on boats at the end of the war to get home, and brought with them more than big hugs for their family – they brought the virus back to their homeland.

These soldiers lived in less than sanitary conditions. Food options were limited to those that lined an aluminum can or those that were dried, requiring the simple addition of water (if you could find water, that is).

With limited hydration and good quality food the body suffers, plus add insult to injury of the severe mental stress that accompanies war-torn locations and PTSD, that many soldiers suffer from. I’m sure that not much can compare to living through that. Their physical bodies were wounded, inflamed and tossing and turning in their sleep.

In essence, they were the perfect debilitate jalopy, the very best vehicle to propagate this deadly virus around the world.

At home, many countries were ravaged by war, and once again, we see malnourished mothers and children who were stressed out and overworked. Trying to make ends meet and manage a household; the perfect receptacle to welcome the gift from their loved ones returning from war.

Likely to Get Sick | Conducive Conditions for Disease

What conditions are ideal for diseases like influenza to flourish in? Think of it this way; our body is no different than a garden, or an ecosystem.

This is contrary to popular belief where many define the body as a machine. A machine can get pieces taken out of it. An ecosystem cannot; when one aspect is ripped out, it can be devastating to the entire system.

There is one thing that is notorious for throwing off the beautiful balance in the ecosystem of our body. This one thing is STRESS, and in our bodies, this causes the “dis” in dis-ease.

Here are a few of the many possible types of stress:

  • Digestive stress
  • Nutrient deficiency stress
  • Inflammatory and immune stress
  • Mental and emotional stress
  • Microbial stress

The list goes on and on…

We know that when we are weak and devitalized from repetitive, non-ceasing stress we are more prone to sickness. This is why influenza typically affects elderly populations, children and those with “dis-ease” or immune-compromised conditions more often.

Notice the spelling of “dis-ease”.

The meaning of the prefix ‘dis’ is a body or system that is not in balance.

This is the same as a garden. One that lacks proper nutrients in the soil, adequate sunlight, water, or love messages won’t grow and is likely to develop infestations and disease.

It only makes sense that the Spanish flu reached such staggering proportions and infected 1/3 of the world’s population at the time.

The true epidemic, in my opinion, may not have been one of the virus, but rather the overall state of health of the population of the world at the time.

How about them apples? They should have been eating more!…

It was World War I, after all. Living in that time would mean constantly feeling an inner sensation of imbalance, that the ‘dis’ could come upon us at any time, and stress became programmed into the makeup of our bodies. Stress was the norm, not the exception as it should be.

Why We Focus On The Bug

You may be familiar with Louis Pasteur, who in the 1800s popularized the idea of The Germ Theory and made it mainstream. The bug (virus, bacteria, yeast, parasite, etc), became the enemy to attack. Kill it and life is good. It was widely accepted as the main tenet that permeates medicine to this day; including in cancer treatments with the bug being our own tissues.

Achieve a well-balanced body with Queen of the Thrones® products.

But what most aren’t privy to, is that at the same time, Claude Bernard was promoting and proving the terrain theory, or physical vitalism. He postulated that the body is an ecosystem and that an ecosystem in health, has a vital force and can beat all disease1.

The difference, it was said, was that Pasteur had friends in high places that moved his philosophy forward. These have served us well, as we have learned an incredible amount about the bug and how it affects an unhealthy body. On the other hand, vitalism went backstage once Bernard was out of the picture.

However, there is hearsay that Pasteur, on his deathbed, recanted his theory and said: “Bernard was right, it’s not about the bug, it’s the terrain”.

Why We Should Focus on Terrain, Vital Force, and Physical Vitalism of The Body

The ancient doctors of the past, Hippocrates, Galen, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors always searched for ways to support the system as a whole. They focused on the foundation, the pillars that would create health.

This is the mechanism of wellbeing, of positioning for success in spite of what is going on around you.

You really can’t control what is happening around you but one thing is for sure, you can control what you do.

A healthy, well-balanced body with a solid foundation is in the right position to overcome anything that may come its way. This was the work that Bernard was so passionate about.

If you have ever seen a naturopathic doctor, functional medicine doctor, or any other holistic healer, this is the premise of their work.

A resilient, strong, balanced foundation in the body prevents all disease.

The reality is that it’s about both the bug and the terrain, and keeping them in balance.

Balance means we want a little bit of acute stress, not longterm constant stress as that becomes damaging, but a little goes a long way2, because it is actually protective, especially to the digestive tract and gut.

As Hippocrates stated:

All disease begins in the gut

How to Prevent the Flu (From a Functional Perspective)

Our goal then is to support the foundation, which begins in the gut. To keep the body and its foundation well supported every day so that it can be healthy.

Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Packs™ to boost your body functions

Here I introduce to you The Queen of the Thrones® Original Cleanse™. The formula used by the ancient doctors who knew the vital importance of making sure that a system can:

  • Poop well
  • Sleep well
  • Cleanse well
  • Bloat less and digest well
  • Stress less and feel well

The simplest of functions and by far the most important is to feel better and be resilient against anything that comes its way.

The Original Cleanse™ is the combination of two ancient, powerful, time-honored practices; the Castor Oil Pack™ and the Beauty Sleep Brow & Lash Kit™.

The Doctors of the Past

Doctors of the past lived by this adage:

The doctor dresses the wound and God [nature] heals it.3

As such, they would use the simplest of therapies such as a compress in the areas that needed help, in order to invigorate the vital force within to heal! Just like you do with a bandaid for a boo-boo.

Why do you think it’s so natural to simply put a bandage on it, or wrap it up? It is literally instinctual to us that it will help us heal. This is why they call it The Original Cleanse. It’s part of our origin story. It is that which will help us regain faith in our healing.

The fact is wearing a compress, such as a Castor Oil Pack™ or the Beauty Sleep Brow & Lash Kit™, stimulates the receptors of the skin that transfer information to the nervous system to put the body into the relaxed state.

The skin provides the ‘on’ switch to the relaxed state by promoting the hormone oxytocin4, which reduces cortisol (the stress hormone)

So the reason soldiers in World War I were so susceptible to the Spanish flu, was simply that wounds (whether an actual wound on the skin, emotional wound, or a misbalance in the immune system), don’t heal under stress5. It’s an impossibility. The system needs a calm, relaxed state that is flooded with oxytocin6 to heal.

Wounds occur when the “equilibrium between synthesis and degradation has been shifted toward degradation”7.

The Natural Law of Balance

The body follows a natural law of balance, otherwise, dis-ease predominates. The Original Cleanse works on setting up the foundation so there can be balance and no dis-ease. It is the simple practice of wearing a Castor Oil Pack™ and the Beauty Sleep Brow & Lash Kit to bed every night.

My first experience with the castor oil pack was transformational, and later clinical experience with thousands of patients proved the same result. And it’s why I’m here telling everyone about them.

For my patients and I, the first thing The Original Cleanse did was bring back FAITH in our ability to heal and feel better. It helped us to believe that balance could be achieved again, despite many failed attempts.

Very appropriately, I use the acronym FAITH to describe the five main foundations of health that Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack™ support, which help to prepare it for any bug that comes its way.

FAITH is the foundation of Queen of the Thrones® Castor Oil Pack™

F: Function of the digestion, absorption, and elimination

Research demonstrates that castor oil enhances prostaglandins8, nitric oxide9 and stimulates capsaicin-sensitive sensory neurons10 in the presence of acute glucocorticoids (the hormones of stress), which actually has a protective effect on the gastric lining, thus improving its function.

Castor oil can enhance defensive mechanisms such as gastric acid as well as digestive enzymes, that serve as a barrier for bugs entering the body.

Castor Oil Packs have been shown to improve the frequency of elimination11, and via prostaglandin stimulation of smooth muscle and nitric oxide electrolyte shifting, reduces food sensitivities thus relieving the immune system.

A: Antioxidant support

Castor oil is a source of vitamin E, omega 6, omega 9, and the end result of what you get from fish oils12. It has also been shown to preserve levels of one of our most important antioxidants, glutathione13, which is required for detoxification in the liver. Wearing a castor oil pack over the liver supports circulation and flow to this area, allowing it to cleanse more efficiently.

I: Inflammation & Immunity

Inflammation must be reduced in the body to make space for healing. Castor oil is a strong anti-inflammatory14 and wearing a castor oil pack is an excellent way to reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. Castor oil packs have also been shown to support white blood cells of the immune system15 which protect our terrain from the bug.

T: Tension/Stress

Stress is another key factor that must be reduced in order for healing to take place. Castor Oil Packs create a gentle compression that helps to move the body into the parasympathetic state16 and that stimulates feel-good hormones like dopamine17 and oxytocin18. Wearing a sleep mask helps to further support the reduction of stress by improving sleep via melatonin production19.

H: Host Microbial Balance

As mentioned earlier, the terrain is just as important as the bug. Part of the terrain of the body is the trillions of bugs (microscopic bacteria), known as the microbiome. A healthy balance of good bugs and bad bugs is a key player in the balance of our digestion, hormones and immune system function. Castor Oil Packs support the microbiome by helping to breakdown biofilm created by bad bugs20 21 22.

The Original Cleanse for Physical Vitalism

The Original Cleanse is a nightly practice that only takes 2 minutes, and helps to strengthen and balance the terrain of our bodies so that they are prepared for the bug, should it come-a-knockin’.

Queen of the Thrones® Original Cleanse™ balances your body as you sleep.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Prepare your castor oil pack by applying 1-2 tbsp of oil in the center of the soft cotton side of the pack, then tie it onto the body over the liver.

Step 2: Pour a dollop of castor oil into the palm of your hand. Use an applicator brush to apply castor oil to eyelashes and eyebrows, then dab the remaining oil into the delicate skin around the eyes. Cover with the eye mask and go to sleep.

That’s it! The Original Cleanse revitalizes, strengthens and balances your body as you sleep.
